Situated in South East Asia with Australia to the South, Timor-Leste is the world’s second youngest nation state, having finally gained independence in 2002. Moving into the 21st century, the coffee farmers of Timor-Leste are working hard to collectively carve out a place for Timorese coffee in the global specialty coffee market. Hatuhei is located in the extremely remote eastern highlands of Letefoho, with the famous Mount Ramelau standing above, awarding the ideal weather conditions for coffee to thrive.
Timorese coffee is truly wild and organically grown underneath the imposing shade trees that dominate the landscape. With time-old traditions in processing coffee, passed on from generation to generation, coffee is helping to build up more opportunities for Timorese people. The Hatuhei cooperative is made up of second and sometimes third generation farmers across 26 small-holder farms, who are working hard with Karst Organics to develop their speciality grade coffee further. This partnership has allowed for the co-operative to continue to produce a deliciously sweet and complex speciality coffee. We think it’s a must try!
